Sunday Morning around 5am, Monroeville Communications received a call reporting smoke coming from the building at the Gateway Grill. The commercial structure assignment was dispatched, bringing all 5 companies. Engine 12 and Squad 1 were due on the assignment from Station 1. The Engine, the Squad, and the Chief responded with a total of 10 personnel from Station 1. Crews from Station 1 were assigned to open the roof for access to the fire, which was running a concealed space with limited access from the interior. Upon opening the roof, we were met with heavy fire. Fire was knocked from the inside by the crew from Engine 42, and then Engine 12’s crew completed extinguishment from the roof. Crews operated on the scene for about two hours. The incident is under investigation by the Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s office.
